FAQs

To improve collaboration across teams and departments, step up your communication game. It may seem like a no-brainer, but a cross functional diagram can improve collaboration by involving different people—so be clear on splitting responsibilities and sharing information across teams.

No matter the complexity of your collaboration, a cross functional flowchart is a must. This powerful tool lays out the business process transparently, illustrating how the various teams are involved in a function or project phase. It can also serve as an initial point of reference for basic questions.

Preparing to kick off a multi-team project? Our cross functional flowchart template provides a basic framework—all the shapes and squiggles you need. You just have to fill in the blanks.

Cross functional flowcharts are often found in business settings and other multi-department organizations. They build on the basic flowchart, introducing more rows to show how relationships between departments, teams, and individuals can impact a process. These flow charts also assign tasks and milestones to specific teams to keep workflows clear and efficient.

Flowchart symbols communicate the various stakeholders and process steps that comprise a project. These can include:

Swimlanes: On a cross functional flowchart example, you’ll find multiple rows, or swimlanes, that correspond to different departments or stakeholders.

Process symbols: These rectangle-shaped boxes describe steps or actions in a project or process.

Arrows and lines: These show the relationships between teams or intermediate goals. Lines and arrows may vary by thickness or shape depending on measures such as the urgency of a step.

Need more elaborate flowchart symbols? Add in cylinders for databases, parallelograms for inputs and outputs, and diamonds for key decisions. There’s nothing stopping you from throwing in your own symbols either. Just remember to include a legend on the side.
