Designed to help students master new vocabulary and concepts, a Frayer model graphic organizer uses examples, non-examples, images, and characteristics to help clarify meaning and build connections.
A Frayer model example typically places a single unknown word, phrase, or concept between four contextualizing boxes. Each box relates to the Frayer model vocabulary differently to help the student establish a comprehensive understanding of the word.
Popular in classrooms to help enhance student vocabulary, the Frayer model vocabulary template can also be used for field- or industry-specific jargon, for example, in business, science, and mathematics. Maybe your team already understands the meaning of “collaboration,” but you want to tweak the definition for an upcoming initiative. Put that shining piece of vocabulary in the middle of our editable template and start brainstorming together.
Begin with a blank Frayer model and write the word in question in the center. Then, fill out each of the four boxes in the Frayer model vocabulary example:
Definition – Write down the meaning of the text in your own words.
Characteristics – Identify key elements of the word.
Examples – Sketch or write out examples illustrating the word.
Non-examples – Draw or note scenarios or actions that do not involve the word.
Sentences containing the Frayer model vocabulary can help clarify a given word's meaning or key concept. Frayer model sentences often appear in the examples and non-examples sections. When creating sentences for these sections, be sure that they contain contextualizing clues that can provide insight into the definition of the word. For example, if you’re diagramming the word “stove,” you’d want to craft a sentence that provides context around how a stove functions.
Consider the following sentences:
1. The stove is red. This is a bad example because so many things can be “red.” The color of the stove does not sufficiently convey what the stove means.
2. I put the skillet on the burner, turned the heat to medium-high, and began frying the eggs—careful not to touch the red-hot stove. This is a clarifying sentence because it tells a story of how a stove works and what you might use it for—two essential components of meaning.
