Shine a light on what’s going on with a sample schematic diagram that draws out the different components of a process.

Keep the lights on

Document existing systems, develop new processes and dispel misunderstanding when you bring processes out of the dark and onto a shared canvas.

Draw it out: From abstract business plans to concrete product models, use visual cues to clarify key points in a multi-step system.

Connect the dots:  Show the basic electrical diagram connections in a complicated model, removing additional details that can slow down communication and muddle responsibilities.

Make maintenance easy: Take the guesswork out of keeping your existing systems running so that your team can spend their effort and energy on more creative tasks.

FAQs

A schematic diagram is a graphical depiction of a system using boxes, lines, and nodes. Traditionally used by electrical engineers but common across many industries, these diagrams provide a bare-bones look at a process—distilling complexities into critical points for a more straightforward illustration of the basic electrical component connections between steps.

Before you begin drawing, ask yourself, what does a schematic diagram show? These diagrams depict complex multi-step processes, so leave yourself plenty of white space at the start.

The next step is to grasp your system or process conceptually. Sketch or write out the entire process, noting every step. Then, tap into a basic schematic diagram example and start mapping. Illustrate the current flow and show how one step leads to another by tracing the connections between components represented by a schematic symbol from beginning to end. Choose symbols that will represent the different entities that comprise your system and keep them consistent to ensure that your entire team understands what’s at play.

If you pick up a schematic diagram and can discern nothing more than lines and squiggles, take a breath. Look for a key or legend matching the component symbols to corresponding components in the system. Leave yourself plenty of time for the first read and try not to get bogged down in the details. Schematic diagrams, after all, are meant to convey the ins and outs of a process at a basic, higher level.
